Frequently Asked Questions

Radiator Questions, Answered Straight

Clear answers on repairs, recores, testing and pricing. Anything else, WhatsApp Martin and ask.

How do I know if my radiator needs repair or replacement?

Common warning signs are overheating, coolant loss, rusty or oily coolant, sweet smelling steam and damp patches on the core or tanks. The only way to know for sure is a pressure test, which we do free of charge. In most cases a repair or recore restores full cooling performance at a fraction of the cost of a new unit.

What is a radiator recore and when is it worth it?

A recore fits a brand new core, the bundle of tubes and fins that sheds the heat, to your existing tanks and frame. It is the most cost effective route for industrial, vintage, plant and hard to find radiators where a complete replacement is expensive or simply unavailable. The recored unit is pressure tested before it leaves the workshop.

What does the free pressure test involve?

We seal the radiator and apply controlled pressure to reveal leaks that are invisible when the part is dry. You get a straight answer on whether the unit is sound, repairable or due for a recore, with no charge and no obligation. See our service guarantees.

What is combustion or block testing?

Combustion testing detects exhaust gas that has leaked into the coolant through a blown head gasket, a cracked cylinder head or a cracked block. A chemical test fluid reacts to carbon dioxide in the vapour drawn from the cooling system and changes colour when combustion gas is present. It confirms the fault early, before it costs you an engine.

Do you repair intercoolers and oil coolers?

Yes. We clean, repair and test intercoolers and oil coolers for turbo diesel bakkies, trucks, earthmoving machines and plant equipment. Blocked or leaking coolers rob power and shorten engine life, and most are far cheaper to restore than to replace.

Can you build a custom radiator?

Yes. We build and recore once off radiators to spec for vintage vehicles, industrial machines, generators and performance applications. Bring the old unit or the measurements and we will quote on a custom build through our contact options.

How long does a repair take?

Most clean and test jobs are finished the same day. Repairs, recores and custom builds are quoted with a clear turnaround time upfront, and we keep you posted on WhatsApp while the job is on the bench.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Work carries a written warranty of 3 to 12 months depending on the type of job, and every repaired or recored unit is pressure tested before collection. The diagnostics behind the work are backed by BEHR Hella certification in cooling system testing.

Do I need to bring the whole vehicle?

No. We are a component workshop, so you or your mechanic remove the radiator, intercooler, cooler or tank and drop it off at 86 Rustenburg Road, Krugersdorp West. That keeps our overheads low and your price down, and it is why workshops and fleets across the West Rand send their cooling parts to us.

How much does radiator repair cost?

Every job starts with a free inspection and pressure test, then a straight quote before any work begins. Because we repair and recore rather than sell replacements, the price is typically a fraction of a new imported unit, and there are no hidden extras. WhatsApp Martin on 076 512 4957 for a quick quote.

The Science Behind The Service

Research Backed Cooling Knowledge

We do not ask you to take our word for it. The way we clean, recore, test and maintain cooling systems is grounded in published engineering research and international standards. Every claim below is cross verified against at least three independent sources. Tap any numbered citation to open the journal or standard it comes from.

Fouling Science

Why Blocked Fins Kill Cooling

Research at Purdue University's Cooling Technologies Research Center shows that airborne dust and debris foul the air side of finned heat exchangers, and experimental work on automotive and industrial radiators found deposits concentrate within the first few millimetres of the fin leading edge, exactly where cooling airflow enters[1]. A published case study of a turbocharged diesel engine radiator measured heat rejection falling from 191.6 kW when clean to 184.2 kW once fouling and wall resistance were accounted for[2]. Review literature across heat exchanger types confirms fouling as the single biggest limiter of thermal performance in service[3].

This is the engineering case for our clean and flush service: restoring the fin faces and tubes recovers the cooling capacity the machine was designed with.

Core Engineering

The Core Does Almost All The Work

Numerical studies of automotive louvered fin heat exchangers show that the air side accounts for 80 percent or more of total thermal resistance, with the air side surface area 8 to 10 times larger than the water side[4]. Computational and experimental research published in the International Journal of Refrigeration and the Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology demonstrates that louver geometry, fin pitch and louver angle directly govern heat transfer performance[5][6].

This is why a recore transforms a tired radiator: fitting a new core replaces the exact component where the research says the heat battle is won or lost, while your sound tanks and frame are reused.

Coolant Chemistry

Maintenance Protocols That Protect Metal

Corrosion inhibitors in engine coolant deplete progressively in service. Industry maintenance literature documents that conventional silicate based formulations lay down protective layers that consume the inhibitor package, which is why they require replacement at roughly two year intervals, while organic acid technology coolants deplete more slowly[7][8]. The international benchmark ASTM D3306 specifies that glycol coolants protect against freezing, boiling and corrosion when maintained at 40 to 70 percent concentration in quality water[9], with a 50 percent mix regarded as optimal for most systems[7].

Neglected coolant is the silent killer we see daily: corroded tubes, blocked cores and eaten header tanks. Regular flushing and correct mixture protect the whole system, not just the radiator.

Diagnostics

Testing Before Guessing

Combustion gas detection in coolant is an established diagnostic science: trade and manufacturer literature documents that petrol exhaust contains roughly 14 percent carbon dioxide and diesel around 13 percent, and that drawing cooling system vapour through a chemical indicator fluid reveals a head gasket or casting failure within seconds when that CO2 is present[10]. Electronic CO2 analysers confirm the same faults non invasively, without engine disassembly[11], and instrument makers document filtered two chamber test methods that screen out false readings[12].

Our combustion testing and free pressure testing follow exactly this principle: measure first, then fix only what is actually broken.
